Boca Grande Tarpon – “Silver King”

Boca Grande Tarpon Season has arrived.  Every year, typically in April, massive schools of tarpon arrive along the west coast of Florida.

The Boca Grande Pass and Charlotte Harbor have long been a favorite destination for both the tarpon and fisherman seeking a chance to hook this mighty fish.  Also known as the “Silver King”, the tarpon is famous its big fight and aerobatic jumps once hooked.  These fish can easily surpass 100lbs and even top 200lbs!

Boca Grande Tarpon Season

Boca Grande has several “island seasons”.  Typically from January to April, the island and Florida in general sees an influx of seasonal residents from up North.  As Spring arrives in Boca Grande, “Tarpon Season” begins.  Instead of visitors seeking a respite from the snow up North, the island has an inflow of fisherman and in particular corporate retreat guests.  While the island is not over-crowded, hotel accommodations, fishing guides and restaurant reservations can still be tough to obtain.  This is result of sales reps and corporate retreats hosting clients for golfing, fishing, dinner parties and more!

The Right Tarpon Fishing Experience

The best way to experience tarpon fishing is to hire a fishing guide.  If you are unfamiliar with a local guide, the Boca Grande Fishing Guide Association is a great resource.  Depending what type of experience you seek, ExpBG can help point you in the right direction.  You might want to experience traditional tarpon fishing in the Pass?  Or test your skills at fly fishing?  Maybe you want to sight fish with live bait to tarpon off the beach or on the flats?  And if tarpon is not your target, needless to say, April and May are excellent months for targeting other game fish, including snook and redfish.  So much depends on date, weather, tides, time of day and of course the experience you wish to encounter or that of your guests or clients.  ExperienceBocaGrande can help point you in the right direction.

There is so much more to do than fish this time of year.  The area beaches are glorious as the water is cool and clear.  The “snow birds” have returned North, but Florida families are not on Summer break yet, so it’s easy to find your own part of the beach.
